About Unconventional AI
Since 2022, AI has entered the mainstream, reshaping entire industries from education and software development to fundamental consumer behaviors. This revolution has created an unprecedented demand for computation - a demand that is now fundamentally limited by energy, not just in the datacenter, but at a global scale.
At Unconventional, our mission is to solve this. We are rethinking computing from the ground up to build a new foundation for AI that is 1000x more efficient. We're doing this by exploiting the rich physics of semiconductors, mapping neural networks directly to the device physics rather than relying on layers of inefficient abstraction.
The Role
This is a hands-on generalist role for someone who wants ownership over the entire accounting and FP&A stack rather than a slice of it. You'll close the books, run the audit, manage the tax calendar, and build the budget and forecasting process, often in the same week.
We are deliberately not drawing tight lines around the job. Some weeks are close and controls; others are a diligence request, a tax filing, a payroll system migration, or a question from the board that needs an answer by Friday. The right person sees the ambiguity as the appeal, not the risk.
You will build the team as we scale and work directly with the CFO and CEO. This is a unique opportunity to help build an AI-first generational company from the ground up.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for several tasks across accounting and finance:
- Financial Leadership: Oversee all accounting operations, including the monthly close process, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Audit & Tax: Manage external audits, liaise with tax advisors, and ensure timely and accurate tax filings.
- FP&A: Own and improve the operating model. Run the budgeting and reforecast process and deliver monthly performance vs. budget. Support board and investor reporting alongside the CFO.
- Team Development: Build and mentor the accounting and finance teams over time, fostering a high-performance culture that supports our ambitious objectives.
- Whatever else the company needs: We run a lean team at Unconventional, and everyone is expected to help wherever they can. You will have the opportunity to take on any operational work that interests you and doesn't have an owner yet.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5–8 years of experience across accounting and FP&A; public accounting plus industry is a common path, as is a startup finance role where you did a bit of everything.
- Startup or tech company experience is required. You've worked somewhere the process didn't exist yet and you built it.
- Strong command of US GAAP and a real understanding of close mechanics, reconciliations, and internal controls.
- Hands-on with an ERP (NetSuite, QuickBooks, or similar) and comfortable owning the systems stack: spend management, payroll, equity administration, and close tools.
- Advanced Excel/Sheets and strong financial modeling ability.
- A self-starter who operates with minimal direction, sets their own deadlines, and closes loops without being chased.
- Clear written communication is a must, as you will be interfacing with company executives and investors.
- High integrity and discretion with sensitive information.
Preferred Qualifications
- Semiconductor, hardware, or deep-tech experience.
- CPA or CFA.
- Big 4 audit background.
- Experience through a Series A/B/C and the reporting demands that come with each.
- Experience standing up a first audit or first tax filing at a company that had neither.
- Comfort automating your own workflows — this is a real advantage on a team this size.
